Should I Hire an Attorney to Establish Paternity of My Child?

Oregon state law requires biological fathers to support their children. Once paternity is established, it is not easily reversed. There can be many reasons why one would want to establish paternity, whether you are the mother or the father, including obtaining child support or challenging support orders. If both parties are cooperative, fatherhood can be determined without an attorney. However, if one parent refuses to participate, then a lawyer may help obtain an Order requiring a paternity test to begin the process. It should also be noted that once fatherhood is determined, legal help may be needed to navigate the complex field of child support agreements.
