In many cases, both terms are used interchangeably to describe a specific custody arrangement. The problem is that there are numerous legal and non-legal terms used to describe the different types of child custody which often lead to some confusion. To add further confusion on the matter, different states may have different definitions of what each custody term means legally. In Oregon, shared custody is not a legal term but may be used to describe a combined custody situation. On the other hand, joint legal custody refers to having shared responsibility in the decision-making aspect of a child’s life.
